A lot of people who work (or have worked) for the state of Colorado have been getting notices from the state because a flash drive containing names, addresses, social security numbers and other sensitive data about nearly 19,000 workers has been lost.

According to The Denver Channel, the missing flash drive contained a lot of sensitive data about state employees and was lost while in transport by a state employee who has since been discaplined. They say that there is "no indication that this information has been misused or stolen," but that the flash drive containing the info has been lost and they are doing all they can to find it.

We are writing to you because an electronic file containing your personal information cannot be accounted for … There is no indication that your information has been misused or stolen, and we are continuing efforts to account for the file. Still, we wanted to alert you to the potential that someone not authorized to access the records could have seen the information, although that is unlikely. As a precaution we recommend that you visit the Colorado Attorney General's Office's website at http://www.coloradoattorneygeneral.gov/initiatives/identity_theft, which contains information on how to protect yourself from the possibility of identity theft.

It sounds kind of like a warning that says, 'No one has stolen your identity, but they might be able to, we'll let you know. Thanks for working for the state of Colorado.'

Let's just hope this flash drive is stick underneath a car seat or a couch cushion or something.

That could be a very unwelcome holiday hassle for 18,880 people.
