What exactly are "safe zones"?

Boulder County implemented them for the first time several years ago in order to promote inclusion and safety for those who identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex, and asexual, according to a recent press release by Boulder County Health.

Due to a recent study by John Snow, Inc. Boulder County Health concluded that the signs were not as effective as promoting inclusiveness as they thought they were, and decided to change the message.

With this in mind, the Boulder County Allies for Inclusion decided to create a sign that says 'Welcome'. This sign aims to show those who identify as LGBTQIA+ that the space they are about to walk into is one of acceptance.
