It's wild that in 2024 there are so many massive brands that were around growing up that are just no more. We're talking about brands that most would have guessed would stand the test of time and always be here.

From huge nationwide brands like Bed Bath & Beyond, Sports Authority, Big Lots, Toys R Us, and so many more, we've seen the lights turn off for some truly iconic companies. One more now joins the list as it's officially closing its last big store for good in October.

It's the end of an era, as Kmart announced it was closing down its final full-sized location, which is located in Long Island New York, on October 20th. The location opened in 1999, but like all of the other closed Kmarts before, this location has finally met its demise.

Kmart locations and Super Kmart locations were once everywhere in Colorado, but slowly began closing doors on stores all over the state in the mid-2000s. The last location we remember in the area was in Brighton, and that's now a Planet Fitness.

From being a leader in the retail world for electronics, clothes, and more for over 60 years, we're sad to see this once prominent and iconic brand come to an end. The last location still using the Kmart name is in Miami, but it's a much smaller outlet-style store.

As a Colorado kid, I have so many fun Kmart memories, but as the shopping landscape shifted to be more online, the writing was on the wall, and another piece of my childhood is gone forever.
