The Denver Nuggets announced they've agreed to a contract extension with head coach Michael Malone after starting the season 21-9, second place in the Western Conference.

Last season Malone led the Nuggets to their second-best record in franchise history, a 54-28 record. It was also the first year since the 2008-09 season that the Nuggets reached the second round of the NBA Playoffs.

The Nuggets are the only team in the NBA to increase their win total in each of the last four seasons.

Nuggets Vice Chairman of KSE Josh Kroenke said this in the press release:

“This season and team has been about continuity, with Coach Malone being the first piece of that. We are thrilled to continue to have him lead this promising young roster and are excited about what the future holds. Coach Malone has been pivotal in this organization’s success and will continue to be so.”

In the time coach Malone has been with the Nuggets, he has coached 357 games with a record of 194-163. That puts him at number four on the win list for Nuggets head coaches.

Coach Malone said this in a press release:

“I would like to thank Josh, Stan and the entire Kroenke family, along with Tim Connelly and the front office, for continuing to believe and trust in me as their head coach. None of this would be possible without the hard work, dedication and trust from our players as well as the entire coaching staff. I’d also like to thank the amazing fans in Denver who have helped make Pepsi Center one of the toughest places to play in the NBA once again. I look forward to continuing our ultimate goal of winning NBA Championships.”
