Identity theft is not a joke, Jim.

Okay, The Office references aside, identify theft is actually not a joke.  According to new data from Safety.com, nearly 10,000 Coloradans fell victim to cybercrimes in 2019 alone.

This puts Colorado at No. 13 on Safety.com's list of "States Most Affected by Cybercrime."

These crimes, which caused over $65 million in losses last year, are often committed through fake phone calls or online phishing attacks, which are used to gather personal information like Social Security numbers and bank account passwords.

With almost 2,000 known cybercriminals present in Colorado, it is important to be aware of the harm they can inflict.

In order to avoid cybercrime, the Federal Trade Commission recommends installing security software on your electronic devices.

If you do fall victim to cybercrime, report the incident to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center here.
