Colorado has many choices for moviegoers as far as which theatre you watch your movies at. One movie company is looking to change the game with a new program where you pay for your ticket based on where you sit in the theatre. Seriously?

Movie Theater Tickets Could Be Cheaper If You Sit Close?

How do you watch movies? I remember back in the day if you were seeing a movie on opening night, or opening weekend, you'd have to get there hours before it started just to get a seat. Some of the bigger theatres would have areas roped off, anticipating lines of people for certain big box office flicks opening weekends. We also always had that late friend (maybe it was me sometimes) that needed someone to hold a seat, which was always the worst. Remember this classic seat-saving scene from Seinfeld?

Nowadays, just about every theatre has a seat reservation system so you don't need to worry about getting there super early to avoid sitting right in front of the screen. What if you could pay less to sit closer to the screen though? Would that make it more appealing? It sounds like that sort of system will be making its way to Colorado soon...

AMC Theatres Sightline Movie Pricing

AMC Theatres, which is the largest movie theater chain in the entire country, announced their new plan to charge for your movie ticket based on where you're going to sit in the theater. They're calling it "sightline," and it will be in all AMC locations by the end of 2023, including Colorado. What is it?

What Is Sightline Seating at AMC Theatres?

In the Press Release put out today (Feb, 6th, 2023), an AMC representative said:

“Sightline at AMC more closely aligns AMC’s seat pricing approach to that of many other entertainment venues, offering experienced-based pricing and another way for moviegoers to find value at the movies,”

The following is how they will determine the new (to-be-released) movie prices.

  • Standard Sightline – these seats are the most common in auditoriums and are available for the traditional cost of a ticket
  • Value Sightline – these seats are in the front row of the auditorium, as well as select ADA seats in each auditorium, and are available at a lower price than Standard Sightline seats. Value Sightline pricing is only available to AMC Stubs members, including the free tier membership – AMC Insider.
  • Preferred Sightline – these seats are typically in the middle of the auditorium and are priced at a slight premium to Standard Sightline seats. As an added benefit to AMC’s most loyal moviegoers, AMC Stubs A-List members may make reservations in the Preferred Sightline Section at no additional cost.

I've typically been a back-row corner guy for many years so this may not affect me too much. Will it affect how you watch movies? Will you sit closer to pay less?
