Affordable Housing In Fort Collins

If you live in Fort Collins, you know just how pricey it is these days. It's why so many towns around Fort Collins are growing so rapidly. People want to live in Fort Collins or work in Fort Collins but can't afford to buy or rent a home there, so they find a nearby city like Timnath, or Loveland to live in and make the commute. Granted, this was in 2005, but somehow, I found a 2 story, two-bedroom apartment right near campus on College and Prospect for less than $500 a month. It's probably because of the train tracks 100 feet from my door, or the paper-thin walls, but I was a broke radio kid and I took what I could afford. Those same apartments are going for well over $1,500 a month now. There is some relief coming soon though as groundbreaking for some affordable housing in Fort Collins is coming this month

According to Denver 7 News, the city of Fort Collins sold a five-acre piece of land on 3620 Kechter Road (pictured above) that will be used and turned into affordable housing through its "affordable housing land bank." According to the city's press release, Indiana-based company "TWG," who bought the land from the city for a development partnership, will build 54 townhomes and sell them to Elevation Community Land Trust from Denver and Housing Catalyst from Fort Collins. The manager for the city's Land Bank Program, Sue Beck-Ferkiss, said:

“The location of this property between two schools and two parks makes it ideal for this townhome community. Generations of families will benefit from the housing built there”

The Elevation Community Land Trust will hold onto the ownership of the land but the townhomes will be sold to qualified low-wage earning households. These homes will be the first "permanently affordable, for-sale housing development homes" in Fort Collins. Details on the special groundbreaking celebration happening this month for this project will be out soon.
