Evacuations are in place as an aggressive wildfire began burning in Larimer County, west of Fort Collins, on Thursday afternoon. Highway 14 is also closed west of the town of Rustic.

A smoke plume from the Cameron Peak Fire was visible in town during sunset on Thursday, adding to the wildfire smoke from two fires burning in Western Colorado.

According to Canyon Lakes Ranger's Twitter, 'Forty firefighters are working on the Cameron Peak Fire burning in the Rawah Wilderness. Air support was unable to assist this afternoon due to high winds. The fire is very active and approximately 500 acres in size.'

Campgrounds in the area have been voluntarily evacuated, according to Larimer County Sheriff's Office, but there are mandatory evacuations in place as well.

'Deputies are asking that people avoid going to Poudre Canyon and the Red Feather Lakes,' 9NEWS said.
