Colorado’s Famous Hanging Lake is Set to Reopen This Summer

Heads up, hikers — Colorado's famous Hanging Lake is still set to open this summer.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service, Hanging Lake formed after a geologic fault caused it to separate from its valley floor. Since then, outdoor enthusiasts from all over the world have come to the landmark to experience its challenging hike and stunning lake.

Unfortunately, 2020's Grizzly Creek Fire triggered devastating mudslides throughout Glenwood Canyon that forced the closure of Hanging Lake.

"When our crews surveyed the trail, we found significant damage. Bridges have been completely destroyed or severely damaged and there are mudslides blocking large sections of the trail," White River National Forest Supervisor Scott Fitzwilliams told visitglenwood.com at the time. "The Hanging Lake Trail is unsafe and impassable in some areas and will remain closed for the foreseeable future."

Thankfully, recovery efforts are underway, and Denver7 reports that the travel destination is on track to reopen later this year.

According to the station, crews will soon start constructing a "primitive" trail to allow public access to Hanging Lake.

Fitzwilliams told Denver7 that, over time, they hope to build a long-lasting trail to hold up for "another 100 years so the public can continue to enjoy this iconic Colorado icon." You can contribute to Hanging Lake's recovery by donating to the White River National Forest Restoration Fund here.
