The Weld County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about an increase in recent mail theft occurrences.

Last weekend, deputies responded to several reports of mail being stolen. The thefts took place late Friday night or early Saturday morning, and were first reported in the 7300 block of Weld County Road 16. During the investigation, more mailbox thefts were reported to have taken place around the same time in the area of Weld roads 23 and 24 1/2.

Via doorbell camera footage, a single, compact sedan was shown driving up to mailboxes in the area.

The Sheriff's Office is anticipating an uptick in mail theft in the coming weeks following the federal government's decision to pass the Coronavirus stimulus package, in which many Americans will be receiving checks by mail. According to the police, scammers tend to be most active during national emergencies and the WCSO has specifically seen crimes like this occur during past times of national crisis.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons or vehicles near mailboxes. If possible, they should also note the license plate of the vehicle, as well as the make, model, color and body style.

Anyone with information about last weekend’s mail thefts or any other crime is asked to call the Weld County Sheriff’s Office at (970) 356-4015 or Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Tips can also be submitted through the Crime Stoppers website at www.crimeshurt.com. Those submitting tips through Crime Stoppers that lead to the arrest and filing of charges on a suspect(s) may be eligible for a cash reward.
