Sporting a shirt that read “SUBSTITU2,” Chris Martin helped fill in for a recovering Bono at last night’s (Dec. 1) ‘A (RED) Thank You Presented by (Bank of America)’ event in Times Square. Joined by the rest of the iconic Irish rock band, Martin opened the World AIDS Day concert with ‘Beautiful Day’ and ‘With or Without You’ after a brief introduction from former President Bill Clinton, who declared, “We are going to win this battle.”

The event was originally orchestrated as a surprise U2 concert, but after Bono’s biking accident, U2 asked Martin and Bruce Springsteen to take his place onstage. They also recruited Carrie Underwood and Kanye West for performances.

Underwood followed Martin and U2 with renditions of her songs, ‘Change’ and ‘Something In the Water.’ West followed with a dramatic, rain-covered medley of ‘Power,’ ‘Jesus Walks’ and ‘Black Skinhead’ -- among some of his other hits.

U2 returned to the stage to close things out, this time with Springsteen in the role of frontman. The Jersey legend took the lead on ‘Where the Streets Have No Name’ and ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.’
