You know that big ball in the sky at night that controls a lot of things? Well, the United States wanted to nuke it at one point! It was during the space race and the project was called, "A study of Lunar Research Flights" also known as "Project A-119".  It was back in 1958 when the Russians launched Sputnik 1, that the pan was made to nuke the moon. According to the lead physicist the motivation behind the nuke was three things, scientific, military and political. It could have shown results in nuclear warfare in space and there were also talks of having nuclear launch sites on the moon.

I guess the good news is had they actually followed through with this, it wouldn't have blown up the moon. They claim you wouldn't have even been able to tell from the Earth.

Pretty crazy to think that all of this almost went down.
