Suspected Drunk Driver Crashes Into Colorado Police Car
The Lakewood Police Department (LPD) is searching for a suspected drunk driver following a crash involving one of their officers.
According to a community alert from LPD, the incident occurred around 8:17 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 31), when a Lakewood agent was checking out an abandoned vehicle on Kipling Parkway.
While the Agent was sitting in his vehicle, a Chevy truck rear-ended his SUV. His emergency lights were on at the time of the accident.
Authorities transported both the Agent and the truck driver to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Although no official cause has been released, the alert noted that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
Research from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of Transportation and FBI crime reports determined that Colorado ranks 13th in the nation in DUI rates.
Colorado has an average of 411 DUI-related arrests per 100,000 people.
In Northern Colorado, Weld County ranks 7th in Colorado in the rate of fatal alcohol-related accidents. Larimer County, meanwhile ranks 8th.
