Shoplifter Tries To Steal Car For Getaway, Foiled By Car’s Interlock Device
A trio of idiots tried to steal nearly $5,000 worth of designer handbags from a TJ Maxx and botched a getaway because one of them couldn’t figure out how to operate a car with an interlock device.
(Blow, then shift…I figured it should have been pretty easy to figure out.)
According to Courant.com, this all happened in Farmington, Connecticut. Store security officers noticed the trio of men stealing the designer handbags and called police. The crooks tried to leave to store and when they saw police, one of them dashed across the parking lot and jumped into an idling car. Yes, he decided police were there to arrest him for shoplifting, so his brilliant plan was to steal a car and escape.
Problem: He revved the engine but couldn’t figure out to put the car in drive.
(An interlock device is one of those mechanisms that some drivers with a history of drunk-driving are required to install that keeps the vehicle from moving until the driver blows some alcohol-free breath into it. They also, apparently, make for good anti-theft devices in cases like this.)
He gave up on stealing the car and then tried to escape on foot, but police chased him down, tased him, and took him into custody. They also caught one of his buddies trying to make an escape too.
