Shark Saves Man Stranded at Sea
This is one of those stories that may eventually get turned into a movie years down the road. A 41-year- old man and his brother-in-law were making was was supposed to be a 2-hour boat trip back home, the island of Maiana, when they took a detour that lasted 15 weeks. May 27th, Toakai Teitoi was just sworn in as a policeman and decided to head home with his brother-in-law via boat. The trip was only supposed to take 2-hours but the men decided to stop on the way and fish. As night approached, they decided to just sleep in the boat and continue home in the morning. One problem though, when they woke up they had drifted out to sea and ran out of fuel.
Dehydration kicked in and his brother-in-law's health began failing and he eventually died as a result. Toakai slept next to his brother-in-law for a night before burying him at sea. Luckily a storm passed through and he was able to fill some jugs with rain water to quench his thirst.
On September 11th he noticed a small shipping boat in the distance but they didn't see him so he did what he had been doing to stay out of the sun and that was to crawl under the small bow of the boat and he fell asleep. He woke up to a bump and looked over the side and saw a 6-foot shark bumping the boat and then it swam off. He then looked up and saw the stern of the fishing boat and noticed the crew was looking at him with binoculars. He was taken aboard and given food and juice.
