Heat has been a big issue in the Poudre School District. (They closed an entire day of school due to heat last August.) The District's new superintendent has a plan that could make the first two weeks of school half-days for middle and elementary schools to try and combat the heat.

According to the Coloradoan, Superintendent Dr. Sandra Smyser recommends that elementary and middle schools would be released two hours early for the first two weeks next school year (2014-15). Those changes would mean for a few calendar adjustments that would have to be approved by the Board of Education by Dec. 10.

From the sounds of it, this all but a done deal, so long as the calendar changes are approved. (You can read more about what the district is looking into in their article.)

I know when the debate about the heat was such a hot topic last fall there were a lot of people very unsympathetic to the kids and teachers stuck in hot buildings with little ventilation and no air-conditioning, but I'm pretty sure anyone that had a kid in one of those over-heated classrooms or anyone that had to work in one is going to be happy there is at least some sort of relief coming their way.

What do you think of starting off the year with "half-days" for middle and elementary schools?
