Poudre School District Declares Financial Emergency, Cuts Staff

The fallout from COVID-19 has caused the Poudre School District to declare a fiscal emergency.

The Poudre School District is held a virtual meeting Tuesday (June 2) to discuss what their budget in the wake of COVID-19. The Coloradoan is reporting that the Poudre School District board of directors has made the difficult decision to lay off employees.

Poudre School District elaborated on the staffing cuts and other measures in a message to the public on Wednesday.

The board voted 7-0 to declare the emergency in advance of an expected 28 million dollar loss in funding due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

One public resident, Sue Torres said this in response to the layoffs:

"All classified employees greatly contribute to the overall success of our school district. Our work is vital, it matters."

 

Some of the reported cuts include nutrition kitchen staff, bus drivers, janitors and payroll staff. The layoffs have already been made, and the district is purposely not filling open positions to save money.

However, District spokeswoman Madeline Nobeltt said the district is "not ready to release final layoff totals because the PSD budget is not finalized."

Poudre School District is expected to release an updated budget on June 9.
