Mesa County Deputy Derek Geer Dies After Being Taken Off Life Support
Mesa County deputy Derek Geer, who was shot in the line of duty earlier this week, has died.
The sheriff's office announced early Thursday Geer was taken off life support.
"It is with tremendous sadness that I announce the passing of Deputy Derek Geer. Deputy Geer has been removed from life support after completing a last selfless act of organ donation," said Sheriff Lewis in a statement.
His funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, February 15, at Canyon View Vineyard Church.
Deputy Geer was shot by 17-year-old Austin Patrick Holzer after he deployed his Taser. Holzer was taken into custody about an hour later.
Geer is a Navy veteran and worked with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office since October 2001. He leaves behind a wife and 2 children, ages 13 and 11.
