Popular Colorado Mercantile Announces Closure After 128 Years
It's one of those stores that the locals would have thought would be around forever. Things change however, and it's time for them to say "goodbye."
After over 100 years, several generations of Coloradans have been through their doors, whether to purchase clothing, market goods, or to have a beer. Now, those doors will be closing.
Will it return in a new space or will it be gone for good?
100+ Year-Old Colorado Business Announces Closure
In August of 2024, we let you know that Masonville Mercantile was for sale for $1.65 million; On October 15, 2024, the store announced it was closing and auctioning off belongings.
Masonville Mercantile, over its last 20 years had been known for providing brides with unique garments for their weddings, had been much more than that in its past.
The original building, not far from where it moved to, was a hotel and general store. Imagine being in the last 1800's and there being this great general store and a place to lay your head; it sounds like "old west," for sure.

People who have lived in the area for a long time might remember when Masonville Mercantile was a pool hall with 3.2 beer for a time. That's when that owner brought in an old jail cell from Loveland.
You can see, while the name remained the same, what Masonville Mercantile was kept changing.
Maybe that's what the "last" owners of the Mercantile have in mind, when they say that they hope new "adventurers" will take on the endeavor:
It is now time for the Mercantile to seek out the next Adventurers who will take this Historical, Mysterious & Unique building into its next phase of the journey… While, it is our hope that the Mercantile will continue to be a purveyor of fine goods that speak of centuries gone by, these old walls and creaking floors would also be the perfect home for a variety of other endeavors… museum, antique or art gallery, escape room, welcoming bed & breakfast, a private home or any number of possibilities.
An auction of the Mercantile's building, property, fixtures, relics and pieces from the past, was scheduled for November 18, 2024. Who's to say what becomes of Masonville Mercantile, exactly, after that?
