Is the Oldest Operating Dragstrip in Colorado?

Along I-76 in eastern Colorado, on your way to Nebraska, you'll find Julesburg. Within Julesburg, is a racetrack that is the oldest one in America, that is still holding races at its original location.

The Julesburg Dragstrip dates back to 1958 when races started at the Julesburg Municipal Airport. The Platte Valley Customs racing group sold bonds to raise money to pave the airport's gravel runway with asphalt.

When flights aren't landing or taking off during the season, it the site of great drag racing.

Over 3,800 people attended that first day of races in April of 1958. It must have been fun, back then, to see those old hot rods blazing down the track; even more so today, knowing how old that track is, and the memories it holds.

Today, the Julesburg Dragstrip, with races held in April into October, has a full restaurant, featuring their Frito Pie, as well as showers that the racers can use.
