Lyft Scooters And Bikes To Be No More In Colorado?
If you've been to a show or event around Downtown Denver, you've no doubt seen the electric scooters and bikes all over the city. You may be seeing far less as Lyft has announced the end of its dockless scooter and bike program.
No More Electric Scooters Or Bikes In Colorado From Lyft
As a kid, and even as an adult, riding your bike or scooter around the neighborhood was a quick and easy way to get around town. When the electric scooter became a thing people were pumped to have an alternative way to get around in high-traffic areas.
The city of Denver introduced its "micro-mobility" fleet back in 2018, which included e-bikes and scooters as an alternative to getting around the busy city without having to drive.
Since introduced six years ago, roughly 20 million rides have been taken on these alternative ways of transportation around the city. I know I've used a scooter a handful of times after leaving various events around Denver, and once we figured out how to use it, we loved it!
Now, you're going to see fewer e-bikes and scooters around Colorado because Lyft has announced it's ending its dockless bike and scooter program.
Lyft To End Dockless Electric Bike And Scooter Program In Colorado
The ride-share giant, Lyft, announced plans this month to end its current dockless bike and scooter program, which is bad news for Colorado because Lyft operates roughly 3,000 of the scooters you see around town and more than 500 of the the e-bikes.
In a statement from Lyft regarding the future of its bikes and scooters, they said:
We are narrowing our product portfolio to focus on our best-in-class bikes and ebikes, scooters, electrified docking stations, and software, to better sell to, serve, and electrify cities. This means we will no longer operate standalone dockless bikes and scooters.
Based on the success and popularity of the electric scooters, the city of Denver wants them to remain a part of its transportation plan moving into the future. Will Lyft convert all of its dockless scooters and bikes to a docking system that makes you pick up and drop off at certain locations instead of just leaving them wherever you leave them? We sure hope so because we love them, and so do our cities.
