Colorado’s Water Future Is Becoming a Big Topic in Montrose
In 2026, there is no way for responsible Colorado communities to ignore conversations about drought conditions and water supply.
Uncertain river forecasts for the Gunnison, Dolores, Uncompahgre, and Colorado are a big concern for farmers, city leaders, and that is why the upcoming West Slope Water Summit in Montrose feels extra important this year.

The West Slope Water Summit will be attended by water experts, conservation groups, agricultural leaders, and government officials to discuss drought outlooks, reservoir conditions, snowpack levels, and long-term planning for Western Colorado. Organizers say that preparing for future shortages is a key topic for everyone. The summit will take place on May 19th at the Montrose Event Center from 7 to 11 a.m., with a complimentary breakfast provided.
Why Colorado River Concerns Are Hitting Farmers Hard
If not for reliable irrigation, the agricultural community in Western Colorado would not have made it this far. Engineering accomplishments such as the Gunnison Tunnel in Montrose and the Government Highline Canal in Grand Junction brought farming to life on the Western Slope. Discussions at this year's summit are expected to include drought and overuse, long-term challenges from hay production to livestock operations, and local food systems.
