Hickenlooper is making his firmest stance since the horrific shooting in Aurora this past summer. He stated, “I wanted to have at least a couple of months off after the shooting in Aurora to let people process and grieve and get a little space, but it is, I think, now is the time is right."

Hickenlooper has not called for any specific legislation, however did indicate strongly of what proposals and debates he would like to happen. Hickenlooper did insinuate that the upcoming January legislative session would be an ideal time to bring up the discussion of gun control in Colorado.

His statements come shortly after the mass shooting in Aurora over the summer and more recently a shooting in Oregon as well as a murder-suicide from a professional NFL player.

Hickenlooper indicates that the issues that deserve discussion are “things like, do we all need assault weapons?” which he said are “designed for warfare” and “designed to pierce bulletproof vests and body armor.”

He also stated, “When you look at what happened in Aurora, a great deal of that damage was from the large magazine on the AR-15 (rifle). I think we need to have that discussion and say, ‘Where is this appropriate?’”

Hickenlooper says there are no immediate solutions but believes starting now can ultimately get it done.
