Fried pickles were the cause of a grease fire at Ram's Pointe student housing Thursday night in Fort Collins. The fire broke loose after grease got to hot, then water was thrown on the flame which ultimately led to a small explosion causing $6,000 in damages.

By the time firefighters arrived on scene the flames were already extinguished because of the automatic sprinkler system installed in the student housing complex.

Poudre Fire Authority Capt. Patrick Love stated, "A friend visiting threw water on the flaming oil, and it exploded,” Love then added that water should never be thrown on grease fires.

It was estimated that the sprinkler system prevented what could have been $1 million in damages to the building. Poudre Fire Authority Capt. Patrick Love also added that the 'sprinkler save' is an 'awesome' example that when proper preventative measures are taken tragedies can be avoided.

Experts say the best way to extinguish a grease fire is to stay calm, turn off the heat source, smother the fire by either using a lid or cover. Smothering the flame in baking soda or salt can also put out the fire. If the fire is unmanageable contact emergency services immediately.
