Colorado Early Colleges Announces Plan for 2020-21 School Year
Like many other schools districts in Northern Colorado, Colorado Early Colleges (CEC) will begin its 2020-21 school year remotely.
The school system, which is Colorado's largest early college and charter school network, made the decision on Wednesday (August 5) after reviewing guidelines from the Larimer County Department of Public Health and Environment (LCDPHE).
Starting next week, students will engage in mostly remote learning with regularly scheduled class times and face-to-face teacher interaction.
However, in-person learning will be available to small groups of students who need extra support during the school year.
"We're here to support you, and a lot of these decisions are really tough decisions, and I know are difficult for our families, and they don't always agree with it," said Collin Turbert, Head of School at CEC Fort Collins High School, in our "Tuned In to NoCo" interview. "At the end of the day, we are taking into consideration all of our families and our students and doing everything we can to support them. Just know that we're working as hard as we can to do that."
Students and staff participating in in-person learning will have to follow a number of safety protocols, including mask wearing, social distancing, enhanced sanitization, and health screenings.
At this time, CEC plans to operate in this fashion until mid-October, when the school system will hopefully return to a more normalized learning approach safely.
"We just want to make sure that everybody feels safe. There is a lot of fear out there and there's a lot of fear in staff, and there's a lot of mixed messaging out there on what to believe and what not to believe," said Sandi Brown, Chief Executive Administrator at CEC. "We are just going to go with the guidance from the health department and follow that. We feel that that is the wisest decision for us to make at this time, as much as we want our students back in the school."
