Nikita the German Shepard. Chewy the Chihuahua. Schnoodle the (mini) Poodle.

These are just a few of the dogs available for adoption at the Larimer Humane Society, a non-profit animal shelter working to serve both animals and people with respect, safety, and compassion.

October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, something that the shelter is well known for. Thankfully, the Northern Colorado community gets in the spirit of this month year-round.

"...they [adoptable dogs] move so very quickly," said Kara Pappas, the organization's Director of Development and Community Relations. "That's because our community is so very, very passionate about dogs and adopting dogs."

To keep up with the high demand, the shelter's website is updated every 15 minutes, so that every community member has the chance to find their new furry family member.

However, dogs are not the only members at the Larimer Humane Society.

The shelter also has a large selection of cats and other critters, including rodents, ducks, turtles, birds, fish and more.

"We've had stray tortoises before," said Pappas. "We'll get animals like sugar gliders in. We've had tarantulas in before."

Aside from adoption, the Larimer Humane Society offers a variety of other services.

They take in many found animals, and work hard to reunite them with their owners. In fact, 9 out of 10 stray dogs that are brought to the shelter are returned to their families.

On top of this, the shelter's Animal Protection and Control team helps to care for strays, investigate animal cruelty cases, and educate the community on the proper treatment of animals.

With all of these services, it's no surprise that the shelter needs volunteers. They are always looking for compassionate people to help make a difference in the lives of Northern Colorado's animals.
