English folk rock band, Mumford & Sons, just wrapped up back-to-back, sold-out shows at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver. I had the privilege of checking out the show last night and walked away fairly impressed. (And yes I have some video of “Little Lion Man to share with you.)

Everyone I had spoken to about this band had rave reviews of their shows, using words like ‘amazing’, ‘the best’, and ‘life-changing’. With that kind of build-up I knew I had to temper my expectations as to not be let down. I will hand it to these guys, they started and finished with a top-notch performance and had a fantastic light show to go along with their tunes.

From their opening song, with the lights, the energy, and the massive sound, it was like a “stadium-folk-rock” show. My only knock was that the middle third of their set was a bit boring. My favorite Mumford songs are very dynamic and have a lot of tempo changes, but they had a string of 4-5 songs that were very dull sounding and didn’t really grasp my attention. Granted they were ‘pretty’ songs, just a bit of a deviation after they opened with such energy. But they did bring it back up on the last few songs and their encore.

One highlight (or lowlight, depending on where you were sitting) was when they played one song totally unplugged. No amps, no microphones, just guys singing with an acoustic guitar. Very intimate and very cool, but pretty tough to pull off with a sold out crowd of 3,700 people at the Fillmore. Those close enough to hear probably though it was one of the best moments of the night, those in the back probably couldn’t hear more than a third of the song. (I have never, ever, heard so many “Shooshes” during a rock show!)

The guys in the band are very talented; Marcus Mumford pulled out his booming voice, a ukulele, and a guitar and even played the drums on a number of songs. (To me, drumming and singing is one of the hardest things in the world to do well.)

I think Mumford 7 Sons has the talent and a unique sound that could take them far. They said they’ll be returning home after this to work on a follow up to their album “Sigh No More.”

On a side note, one of the funniest moments of the week happened when I saw a drunk girl next to me fail at dancing. She was doing a part line dance/part river dance/part hippy dance when both feet went out from under her and sent her $10 beer splashing onto the hardwood floor (No one was hurt so it’s ok to laugh right?)

It was one of those made-for-TV falls followed by a fit of giggling. Once she stood up she gathered friends around to laugh about it and kind of reenacted what she had done before she went down. But as she was doing that she stepped in her spilled beer and, boom! Down she goes again!

Ahh, people watching…one of America’s greatest pastimes.

Now as promised, Mumford & Sons performing "Little Lion Man" I took at last night's show. FYI. the Video is not safe for work (NSFW) as they do drop the F-bomb numerous times in the song. Don't say I didn't warn you. (It's not the best quality video, but hey, it's a cell phone taking video in a sold out crowd...what do you expect?)

And here is a video uploaded to YouTube from which shows off some of the cool lights at the show.
