Woman Charged for Fatal Fort Collins Crash That Killed 1-Year-Old
The accident occurred at the intersection of Carpenter Road and County Road 9, when the Ford Explorer of 28-year-old Tiffany Burke collided with a Ford F-350 that was heading eastbound.
Burke was waiting at a stop sign, when she turned left in front of the truck. Investigators determined that the truck driver did not have a stop sign and had the right of way.
Burke and an unnamed juvenile, who was unrestrained, were ejected from the vehicle. One-year-old Riley Santos was also in the car, but was restrained.
Santos and the juvenile both sustained serious injuries and were taken to Children's Hospital in Denver. Santos later died from his injuries on August 25.
Burke was also injured and taken to Medical Center of the Rockies. The truck driver was uninjured.
After further investigation, police determined that Burke was likely under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident.
She was arrested on Monday (December 16), and charged with vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, child abuse, and driving under the influence.
"This was an absolutely heartbreaking incident," said FCPS Chief Jeff Swaboda. "I cannot emphasize this enough: sober, responsible driving is a critical part of keeping our community safe and preventing tragedies like this."
