In news that will probably baffle comic book fans and normal people alike, it was revealed that Thor (yes, the Avenger) is no longer worthy of his title and will be replaced by a woman. Yes, you are allowed to unleash a collective "What?!" right about now.

With 'Thor: The Dark World' outperforming the first 'Thor' both domestically ($204 million vs. $181 million) and worldwide ($632 million vs. $449 million) a 'Thor 3' was all but inevitable. Now Marvel has confirmed it by hiring one of their own to write it.

Though Joss Whedon is busy working on the script for 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron' and has admittedly been conceptualizing his sequel for some time, he still answered the call when 'Thor: The Dark World' director Alan Taylor was in trouble. According to Taylor, Whedon came in to save some major issues he was having with the film.

This latest news might come as a bit of a disappointment for all you Loki-lovers out there -- it seems Thor's antagonistic and mischievous brother won't be returning for 'The Avengers 2.'

'Thor 2,' dubbed 'The Dark World,' will see Chris Hemsworth return as Marvel's mighty God of Thunder to crush some new foes with his hammer, and the first trailer is said to drop next week on April 23 (according to the film's international Facebook page). The comic book blockbuster ‘The Avengers’ doesn’t drop until May of 2012, but Entertainment Weekly just whet the appetite of fans of the superhero team with a gallery of photos featuring Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye.

'Thor' continued to show its strength at the box office this weekend. The Marvel superhero flick, starring breakout hunk Chris Hemsworth, took in an estimated $34.5 million, bringing its 10-day total to $119.3 million. Overall, 'Thor' was down 48 percent from last weekend, according to EW.com.
