Sunday is Colorado Cinnamon Roll Day. Thanks to the efforts of 10-year-old Sam Tollison of Fort Collins, Gov. John Hickenlooper has designated Sunday, as the day to celebrate the beloved cinnamon roll.

It all started when the 4th grader at Linton Elementary School wondered why Colorado had no state pastry, so he sent a petition to Governor Hickenlooper. While the Governor did not officially make the cinnamon roll the state pastry, he did send Tollison an official proclamation dated December 2nd, 2011, declaring January 8th, 2012, Colorado Cinnamon Roll Day.

To help celebrate the day, Silver Grill Café in Old Town Fort Collins is offering free giant cinnamon rolls for school age kids and coupon giveaways on Sunday. Sam will be at the Silver Grill at 10 a.m. Sunday with Fort Collins Mayor Karen Weitkunat to commemorate the event.

The Reporter-Herald says Johnson’s Corner will also be giving away free cinnamon rolls to anyone who donates to their drive to collect winter coats, blankets and perishable food during January.
