There's a right way and a wrong way to fly with a firearm. According to CNN, over 4,400 U.S. fliers found that out the hard way in 2019. DIA came in at #3.

First off, you'd think this would go without saying: If you are taking a gun on a flight, make sure it's unloaded. According to CNN and the TSA, almost 90% of fireams that were seized at U.S. airports in 2019 were in fact, loaded.

Of the 4,432 firearms seized in 2019, Denver International Airport took in the third most with 140. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International had the most with 323; Sky Harbor in Phoenix had the 5th most with 132.

What strikes me as a little odd, or disturbing, is that 4,432 is only a 5% increase over the 2018 figures.

If you want to avoid being a statistic for 2020, which may even include a $13,000 civil fine, here's how you take your firearm with you to your destination:

  • Make sure it's unloaded
  • Put it in a locked, hard-sided case
  • Take it to your airline's check-in counter to declare it and check it.
