According to the Federal Space Agency Russia sent over one hundred living animals along with a satellite into space yesterday.

Alongside the satellite, the rocket contains passengers of 45 mice along with lizards, snails, plants, seeds and even certain strains of bacteria. The 'experiments' will take place over a 30 day span.

According to the Institute of Biomedical Problems, scientists seek to test how the animals will respond to weightlessness and how they reintroduce themselves to gravity after they return to earth.

"There has been a long history of this kind of biological research over the past  40 years, and NASA and the Russian side have been collaborating for that entire  time, which is pretty remarkable. But each mission kind of brings a unique  focus, be it the actual duration of the mission or the specimens being flown," according to Nicole Rayl, NASA's project manager for this mission.

Scientists will monitor the animal's health as well as the living conditions over the 30 day period before they return to earth on May 18th.
