Restaurant Review: The Sink in Boulder
Sunday is usually the day that my wife and I get to spend together and do something fun. Yesterday we decided to take the long way into Boulder. We walked the Pearl Street mall for a bit and then wanted to get some food. One of my things I like to do is go to places that have been on Diners, Drive-In and Dives on the Food Network. I remembered there was a place in Boulder that I have been wanting to try for year called The Sink which is on the hill. We jumped back in the car and drove over there. Both of us were hungry and I was excited when we walked through the door.
The ceilings are low and everywhere you look there is artwork painted on the walls from artists and patrons alike. Even this guy left his mark on the Sink in Boulder.
We got to our seat and looked over the menu and we decided to get an appetizer, which was the bacon stuffed jalapenos.
For me, these were the highlight of our food! They were hot with spice and temperature. The bacon was good and so was the cheese filling. On to the main courses...
My wife decided to order the bacon mac-n-cheese:
We both agreed that the menu made it sound appealing and that is pretty much where it ended. The cheese in macaroni and cheese is suppose to be creamy... This wasn't so much creamy as is was dry and pasty. You can see in the photo that the macaroni and cheese looks "dry". I am assuming that is why there was so much sour cream atop the mac-n-cheese. The cheese almost had the consistency of powdered cheese mix, but less flavor. The bacon, ideally, would have been well proportionally spread out over the dish. Instead it was clumped to one side and most was in a minced up, compacted, cold ball. One word to describe this dish would be "Meh".
On to my main dish... Since this was featured on Triple D, I had to get it!
I love BBQ, so the Cowboy Reuben was a no brainer for me. Bring on the brisket!
Again, this is where the menu had my interest and when the food actually came, lost me. Initially, it looked pretty good, until I picked up the sandwich. The bottom of the rye bread was pure mush. Apparently, it sat in the window for some time before coming to our table because the bread was breaking down due to being soaked. There was really no juice per say in the sandwich when I got it. You would assume that a side of beef smoked for 10 hours low and slow would have some great flavor right? Not really. The BBQ sauce and coleslaw was the only thing I could taste. The brisket by itself was chewy like an overcooked roast and flavorless.. Bummer. The fries were bottom of the batch old, cold and broken up. I was lucky to find a few more than an inch and half long and didn't eat more than a few.
The Sink in Boulder is a cool place to enjoy a beer while watching a game with some appetizers. When it came down to the main meal, I feel the ball was dropped on the quality of our meal.
