Here's a statistic that really caught our attention: About half of Colorado homes may have radon levels that require action.

If you're not familiar, radon travels from the soil into the air as uranium breaks down, so it can seep into your home through space between basement walls and the slab, foundation cracks, openings around sump pumps and drains, and more, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment. It's the second leading cause of lung cancer, behind smoking. It's called the silent killer.

Since it's a natural process, your home may have dangerous radon levels now even if it didn't 10 years ago or even if your neighbors' homes don't now. Thankfully, it's easy to find out — you can hire a company to test for it, you can purchase a home testing kit, or you can order a low-cost testing kit online here.

If you learn that your home does have a concerning level of radon, you'll want to test your well, too, if you use a private well. The Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment has tons of great information on ways to mitigate high levels of radon, including options you can do yourself.
