Every now and then, you’re minding your own business, scrolling around on the internet, and suddenly something pops up that completely messes with your brain.

That’s exactly what happened when we came across something hiding in satellite images of the Grand Mesa.

And now, like it or not, we’re all dealing with a classic case of pareidolia, that strange little brain trick where people see familiar shapes in random things like clouds, rock formations, or a piece of toast that suspiciously looks like Elvis.

While looking at satellite imagery of the Grand Mesa, something jumps out almost immediately.

What does it look like?

A massive skull… with a giant bone next to it.

Seriously. Take a look at the full view, and your brain will instantly connect the dots. There’s a rounded skull shape and what looks like a long bone stretching away from it.

At first glance, it seems ridiculous.

Then your brain goes: “Wait… that actually does look like a skull.”

And just like that, you’re stuck seeing it forever.

The comments on the Facebook post were full of amazement, lore, and well, some went down a deep-deep rabbit hole. We're not making fun of any of that, you're totally free to believe what you want.

One of the most common comments was about the "Land of the Giants," which is a lore of the Grand Mesa. We've shared the story about the Ute legend of the Thunderbirds, giant birds that preyed on hunters.

It is believed that this area was once roamed by giant humans, and this may be their petrified bones. So we did a bit of measuring to see just how big of a giant this could have been.

Okay… But How Big Is This “Skull”?

Out of pure curiosity (and maybe poor decision-making), we did a little measuring using Google Maps.

The skull shape measures roughly 7.5 miles long.

The bone shape stretches about 42 miles.

Yes. Miles.

If this were an actual skeleton, which it absolutely is not, the giant would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 miles tall based on normal human body ratios.

For context, the tallest mountain on Earth only reaches about 5.5 miles high.

So if this giant were real, its head would basically be hanging out near space, wondering why the oxygen had suddenly disappeared.

That probably explains the death.

Grand Mesa Has Always Been a Little Mysterious

This isn’t the first time locals have spotted strange shapes in the mountains around the Grand Mesa.

Many longtime Grand Valley residents swear they can spot animals in the snow patterns during winter, including a swan, a bear, and sometimes even a fish, depending on how creative your imagination is that day.

There’s also a famous one tied to a local legend.

Some residents say that during the summer, the mountainside reveals the shape of a giant thunderbird carrying a serpent.

That image connects to stories from the Ute people, whose traditions include powerful thunderbirds that ruled the skies above the region.

One version of the story says the Colorado River was formed when a thunderbird dropped a massive serpent onto the valley floor.

Whether you see the bird or not, it’s one of those legends that adds a little extra flavor to the landscape.

The Grand Valley’s Old Curse

The Grand Valley also has one of the strangest local legends you’ll ever hear.

According to the story, when settlers forced the Ute people from the valley, the land was cursed. Anyone born here would never truly be able to leave.

The only way to break the spell?

You’d have to collect dirt from three places:

  • Mount Garfield
  • The junction of the Colorado River and Gunnison River
  • Colorado National Monument

Put the dirt in a jar, carry it with you, and you’re supposedly free to go.

Whether you believe the legend or not, plenty of longtime residents will tell you the same thing: There’s something about this valley that keeps pulling people back.

The Ute also believed the land was where the souls of the departed journeyed to the Grand Mesa to spend eternity in its sacred landscape. They called it Thiguanawat, or "The Land of the Departed Spirits."

And now… apparently it also has a 60-mile-tall imaginary skeleton hiding on the side of the Grand Mesa.
