In places like Grand Junction, Delta, and Montrose, reliable mail service is still an essential service. After several price increases in recent years, it’s like nails on a chalkboard to hear the government talking about a $1 stamp.

It’s not just random buzz; USPS leaders and lawmakers are discussing this price hike consideration as part of a broader financial rescue plan. Here’s why this story is gaining traction.

The cost of mailing a one-ounce letter in 2000 was 33 cents. Today it costs $0.78. Proposals suggest that this price is likely to rise to $0.90 or even $0.95 in the near term, with $1 being discussed as part of the plan. Remember, right now, this is all talk. However, we have seen the dadgum price of stamps go up eight times since 2019 (40% increase over five years). It’s easy to understand frustration over this. In the end, it’s up to the Postal Regulatory Commission before a $1 stamp materializes.

Why USPS Says Prices Need to Go Up

The Postal Service has sadly not turned a profit since 2007. It continues to lose billions annually as mail volume declines. However, communities like ours still rely on the system. What makes it hard on Coloradans is that we endure multiple price increases over a short period, and still can’t get what we pay for. In the past year, I have not had but one priority package I’ve paid for show up at the promised time. This is just one person's experience, but it's one reason why so many of us are a bit low on sympathy for the good us USPS price increases.

No stamp price increases were planned for the beginning of 2026, but USPS has hinted at changes coming as soon as mid-year, pending regulatory approval. There are rules in place that oversee how often prices can rise (seriously?), so any major jump, like $1 stamps, would take time to change the policy, according to postal regulators.
