Guess What Game Was Banned In Prison?
This week a three-judge panel upheld a ban put on prisoners and the role playing game Dungeons & Dragons by a Wisconsin Correctional Facility. In game-speak, his Elf’s rebellion has just been crushed with the staff of +4 court justice.
A guy brought the lawsuit against the prison after they confiscated his 96-page handwritten (Yes, handwritten) D&D manuscript and his game boards, pieces and multi-sided dice.
According to the story in the New York Times, a prison gang specialist said this about the game:
“Dungeons & Dragons could foster an inmate’s obsession with escaping from the real-life correctional environment, fostering hostility, violence and escape behavior.”
I never really got into Dungeons & Dragons. I did have a brief stint into the Shadowrun world as a kid, and spent many hours playing video game role playing games like final Fantasy XII, and Ever Quest (or Ever-Crack as we called it), and I don’t think it warped my mind. Then again, I’m not a prison psychologist.
The appeals court said that the prison’s claim is legit and the inmates in that prison can’t play D&D anymore, so maybe they can request some other board games. I’d give them “The Game Of Life”. You know for puns sake, just so I could give him life in prison.
Ok enough with the bad jokes.
