Dress codes are always a hot-button issue in schools. But Greeley has taken some pretty drastic steps in their new restrictions for what students can wear. No red, no blue, and no references to the numbers; 13, 14, 18, 31, 41 or 81.

These rules were implemented last year in an effort to stop gang-related intimidation in the schools.

"It revolves around gang activity, decency and obscenity,” said John Gates, director of safety and security for the district, about the dress code. “As we developed gangs in our system, we had to develop (the policy) more. We had to be more specific than before."

The District Six dress code bans things like:

  • No red or blue belts or shoelaces
  • No solid red or solid blue shirts
  • No red or blue “Dickies” or “Southpole” brand pants, shorts or shirts.
  • No red or blue bandana or any color bandana that is draped on clothing or hanging out of a pocket.
  • No Sports jerseys with the numbers 13, 14, 18, 31, 41 or 81

That means fans of Terrell Owens, Calvin Johnson, Peyton Manning, Miroslav Satan, Wilt Chamberlain, Dan Fouts, Vincent Jackson, Mike Piazza, Reggie Miller, Dirk Nowitzky, or Alex Rodriguez are all out of luck if they want to wear their jerseys to school.

“If someone wears a Broncos jersey with the number 13, it is unacceptable,” Gates said. “But 7 is OK. Parents and kids tell us all the time gang activity intimidates them. It creates a situation where kids who want to learn are intimidated. These policies are always unpopular, but, again, we want to create a safe learning environment.”

It's a sad time in the world when policies like these have to be made.
