Correction: At the end of the interview, it states the incorrect date for the class. The class occurs every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Raintree Athletic Club.

It's no secret that yoga is known for stress relief, which is why Fort Collins is using the ancient practice to help some of the most vulnerable members in our community when it comes to stress: veterans.

With over 400,000 veterans in Colorado, it's important to take care of them when they fought so hard to take care of our country.

Tonya Dunn, a yoga instructor specializing in trauma recovery, is working to do just that. Every Tuesday at 7 p.m., Dunn teaches a free class for veterans at the Raintree Athletic Club in Fort Collins.

The class is specifically tailored to veterans who suffer from physical disabilities, PTSD, or other trauma-related issues.

"We are sensitive not only to their emotional state but also to their physical state," said Dunn. "We don't walk around the room...we never walk behind people as to startle them. We never put the population in a vulnerable position."

The class is also not set in stone, as Dunn works to adapt every session to the needs of the particular population she has that day.

She also passes no judgement on anyone who attends: "It's okay to cry. It's okay to shake."

For Dunn, the ultimate goal of the class is to provide veterans with resources they can use outside of the yoga studio. She uses a technique called inner resourcing, which aims to give veterans a peaceful mental place they can 'visit' during stressful times.

"We teach them to ground, self-regulate, and breath," said Dunn. "Learning how not to be triggered, and [if they are triggered] how to then self-regulate."
