The Fort Collins Rescue Mission is moving out of Old Town, at least temporarily.

The Coloradoan reports the Fort Collins City Council approved an emergency resolution that will allow a temporary shelter to operate out of a larger 15,000-square foot space benefiting community members in need.

Fort Collins Rescue Mission is putting their current overnight shelter on hold so staff can concentrate on this new, larger shelter located at 1301 Blue Spruce Drive in Fort Collins, at the same spot as the Food Bank for Larimer County.

Rescue Mission Senior Director, Seth Forwood told the Coloradoan they are working to accommodate as many people as they can, approximately 100 to 150 people, while abiding by social-distancing guidelines.

In June, the Fort Collins City Council voted to close the emergency shelter at Northside Aztlan Community Cewnter in favor of a day camp for kids, according to the Coloradoan. However, the city did not change their camping ban and Fort Collins police continue issuing tickets to the homeless.

Since the Coronavirus hit, Rescue Mission has been turning people away in need of a place to sleep as they can only operate at 50% capacity to maintain social distancing.

The Rescue Mission is paying for their meals, staff, supplies and cleaning while the city will pay for security day and night to prevent disturbances. Staff will also be providing to-go lunches for overnight guests.
