Food Bank for Larimer County Need for Turkeys at All-Time High
The food bank is experiencing a record shortage of turkeys ahead of the holidays, the Food Bank for Larimer County said in a news release, citing high demand and a national shortage.
The food bank is now asking the public for donations of frozen turkeys, ham or whole chicken by Thursday, November 18. The Food Bank for Larimer County said it initially had a goal of reaching 6,500, but has only reached 10 percent of that goal. The food bank now says this is a 'red alert.'
'We are genuinely worried about holiday meal availability for everyone who has requested extra support,' Amy Pezzani, CEO of the Food Bank for Larimer County, said in the release. 'If you can’t find a turkey, please donate a frozen ham or a whole chicken. Our goal is to ensure that no one in our community goes without a holiday meal this Thanksgiving.'
The Food Bank for Larimer County says that many grocers have put a limit on the number of turkeys that can be purchased, making it difficult for shoppers to purchase an extra to donate. Possibly consider purchasing a turkey if you're someone who wouldn't be buying one anyway (like if you opt for tof-urkey or aren't the trusted cook on Thanksgiving... yes, I mean me).
On Thursday, November 18, New Belgium is teaming up with the food bank for Tour de Turkey, and the first 250 donors will get a coupon for New Belgium products, and have the chance to win a prize pack.
The Food Bank for Larimer County said that most who receive a turkey from them have few other options for a meal on the holidays. You can also donate to Townsquare Cares: Feeding NoCo, where a $25 donation can feed a family of four.
