Police have cited a dump truck driver for failing to yield and crashing into a train in Greeley, according to The Greeley Tribune

The crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday (January 11) at the railroad tracks near 59th Avenue.

Elwin Abarca, 43, was heading south on 59th Avenue when he collided with a BNSF train going eastbound.

Abarca received minor injuries and was taken to North Colorado Medical Center.

The train was safely moved, while Abarca's employer towed the dump truck. It is unknown what company he worked for.

This is not the first time an accident has occurred at that railroad crossing. 59-year-old Obed Bermudez died when his semi truck crashed into a train there in 2017.

In order to avoid train-related crashes, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends the following:

  • Remember to slow down when approaching railroad crossing signs, as trains have the right of way.
  • Do not enter the crossing if you don't have room to get across.
  • Stop at all marked stop lines. When there is no line, stop at least 15 feet from flashing lights and lowered gates.
  • Never ignore railroad signals and do not drive around a lowered gate.
  • After a train comes, do not cross until the gate is lifted and lights have stopped flashing.
  • Beware for multiple trains, as more than one train can come from different directions.
  • If you are stuck in a crossing, exit your vehicle and the crossing and call 911.
