Colorado State University is requesting 800 healthy, middle-aged pet dogs to be tested for trials to find a vaccine that might prevent canine cancer.

This will be the largest clinical trial conducted on canines for preventative care. If successful the vaccine wide variety of cancers would be avoided.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of California, Davis are also recruiting canines for this research study.

Dogs in the trials must live within 150 miles of trial sites and meet these qualifications:

  • Between 6 and 10 years old
  • At least 12 pounds
  • No history of cancer or autoimmune disease(s)
  • No significant illnesses resulting in a life span less than 5 years
  • Be one of 45 breeds listed here

Dogs chosen to be in the trial are required to return to the study site for a semiannual check-ups for five years.

If the dog develops cancer during the trial the owner will get hospital credit and the dog will receive treatment.
