Every generation that has grown up in Colorado has seen its share of "hip" slang words/terms. Some stick around, some fizzle out, but they all find their way to the young people for a least a while.

When you take a look at these words you have to wonder who came up with them in the first place. Imagine being the person who coins a phrase and it goes "viral;" it has to be very satisfying.

You can share the list with your friends: "Take a look a this gnarly list!"

Slang terms have been around for decades as a way for a persons vernacular stand out. Who doesn't want to stand out more than a young person? So, they latch onto the latest in slang and ride it for all that its worth.

What's funny is how the young people love to use slang as a way to set themselves apart from adults, and then when adults start using the slang, the kids freak out. Then again, some "trendy" slang terms become a part of everyday society.

Slang Terms That Are Now Widely Used:

  • Sick - as in great.
  • Fire - also as in great.
  • Bummer - as in unfortunate.
  • Squad - as in your group of friends.

That list goes on and on, with terms that used to be unheard of, then became popular. A lot of times, young people will start using a slang term that ends up running its course and disappears from society altogether; "fiddlesticks" and 'the cat's pajamas," for example.

The Associated Press put together a list of seven words/phrases that teens are using these days, their meanings, and how they came about. Let's take a look.
