89 Colorado Safeway’s To Be Sold. Is Piggly Wiggly Coming Now?
The Kroger and Albertson's merger will greatly affect Colorado, as they announced when/if it becomes official, almost all of the Colorado Safeway locations will be sold... Does that make way for a Colorado Piggly Wiggly debut?
Piggly Wiggly To Take Over Colorado Safeway Stores?
Kroger, which is the parent company of Colorado's King Soopers stores, is impending a merger with Albertsons. After that is final, 89 Colorado Safeway stores will be sold. Who are the buyers?
C&S Wholesale Grocers, who are the parent company of the famous Piggly Wiggly. When the merger talks began, there were talks about which of its Colorado stores Kroger would be selling after the merger.
While King Soopers was the original thought, it turns out that 91 Colorado stores in total will be sold to C&S, 2 Albertsons stores, and 89 Safeway stores (all but 14 Colorado Safeway stores), which has brought back the question of whether C&S will convert any of their newly acquired stores to their famous Piggly Wiggly brand.
C&S Wholesale Grocer To Convert Safeway Into Piggly Wiggly In Colorado?
With Piggly Wiggly already located in 18 states, why wouldn't they consider spinning some of their new Safeway Stores into Piggly Wiggy's? After all, Piggly Wiggly was already in Colorado over a century ago, with the last location here closing in the 1930s.
Our friends at Denver7 spoke with a C&S Wholesale Grocers representative regarding a potential Piggy Wiggly appearance in Colorado, and they said:
The agreement is set to close in early 2024, subject to regulatory clearance and customary closing conditions. At this time, no more information will be available.
It sounds like C&S will have the exclusive rights to Albertson's name across Colorado, which was a big force in our state years back, so that would be way more likely. Piggly Wiggly fans shouldn't rule out a return though, because there seems to be quite an interest from local consumers within Colorado to bring this brand back.
Would you be sad to see the Safeway name retired to either Albertson's or the Piggly Wiggly? As long as they weren't as expensive as Safeway seems to be, we'd gladly get our Piggly Wiggly on. If Safeway does go away, you can add that name to the list of other iconic brands like these that have left Colorado in the last couple of years.
