Sales of one household product have dropped significantly because millennials don't know what it's even used for.

According to the Wall Street Journal, U.S. sales for liquid fabric softener have dropped 15% from 2007 to 2015, with the leading Downey brand dropping 26% in that same period.

While reps from Snuggle say the decrease in sales can be blamed on millennials' eco-consciousness and desire to have fewer chemical products in their home, P&G's head of global fabric care Shailesh Jejurikar says it's simply because most millennials "don't know what the product is for."

In case you're a millennial reading this and saying to yourself, "Yea! What IS fabric softener used for?" It's literally used for just that - to soften fabric in the wash. Back in the 1960s when laundry came out of the wash feeling rough and super uncomfortable, fabric softener was created to alleviate that problem. Over time detergents and washing machines have lessened that scratchiness, lessening the need for something like fabric softener.
