A Colorado group is working on developing strains of hemp that are high in CBD and low in THC, the psychoactive chemical found in marijuana.

The group, put together by The Fat Pig Society and the Agricultural Genomics Foundation, is made up of Colorado hemp farmers dedicated to testing plants for both CBD and THC with the goal of producing hemp with high levels of CBD while still being under the legal limit of THC, 0.3%.

Ever since Colorado legalized recreational marijuana in 2012, the industry has been evolving quite rapidly. Dispensaries have been popping up across the state, and have recently been deemed 'essential' in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.

However, in recent years, a lot more attention has been given to CBD, a chemical found in marijuana that does not affect the user like a psychoactive drug but is more well known for its healing purposes. Unlike marijuana with THC in it, CBD items can be purchased outside of dispensaries, in places like convenience stores and smoke shops.

The Colorado group pioneering this project will be working diligently to cultivate plants, test seeds, and will even be working with The University of Colorado-Boulder to orchestrate their plan. While other states may shake their head at us and dismiss Colorado as just a weed state, it's projects like this that prove that marijuana is less of a dangerous drug than a natural, healing herb.
