At least 65 people are dead and countless more are missing as rescue workers dig through the rubble left behind by a massive 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Christchurch, New Zealand yesterday.According to CNN, one of the country's largest cities is in ruins.

"This is just heartbreaking," New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said during a trip to survey the damage. "This may be New Zealand's darkest day."

The quake knocked out phone lines, including the city's emergency service number, crakced roads, toppled building, broke water mains, and 80% of the city was without power.  CNN also reports that the city's airport is closed until further notice.

The quake was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks, and officials are worried there could be more. Read about seismologists warnings of future quakes here.

New Zealand has seen a few recent earthquakes, but not this close to a major city center.  As you can see in the photo gallery, it looks like absolute bedlam in the city streets.  Videos like the ones below show buildings still falling apart and the sheer destruction brought on by the quake.

Christchurch is a city home to about 375,000 residents. Scary and sad news.  My thoughts are going out to the people of New Zealand.
