That is certainly not a headline I was expecting to see this morning.

It’s like a Gallagher joke gone bad in China, farmers are being terrorized by exploding watermelons! I’m not kidding, about 20 farms in China have been affected and have lost 115 acres of melons because they are exploding.

What's causing the fruit to burst?

The BBC reports that farmers gave the melons an overdose of growth chemicals.  Combine that with severely wet weather and you get exploding melons.

The affected farms are around Danyang city in the Jiangsu Province of China. None of the busted up melons can be sold, marking a huge loss for the farmers.  But, they are salvaging some of the crop by hacking the remnants up and feeding it to livestock.
