Yup its true. Bubble wrap was invented by two New Jersey scientists, Alfred W. Fielding and Marc Chavannes. It was launched on January 31st, 1960, but not as packing. It was originally supposed to be for wall-paper. Let me just say, had this actually happened, I don't think my parents would have been able to use it. I would've just popped it or try to pop it by running into walls. Though, if it was used as wall-paper it might save some bruised heads or toes(if it covers low enough). Bubble wrap as wall-paper probably would have caused the great product to fail... good thing its used for packing.

Random facts: Bubble wrap appreciation day is coming up on the 31st of January, and there is enough bubble wrap made every year to wrap around the world at the equator ten times!
